Region Jumilla
The region of origin Jumilla has the wine tradition that is important from past centuries. From the Spanish Romanization, the vine was cultivated in this region. At Jumilla were founded the rests of vitis vinifera that are the oldest in Europe (year 3000 A.C.), like utensils and the archeological rests, like earrings made of Iberian gold with the form bunch of grapes that are dated to IV A.C. century. ( The replica of those earrings is the figure which the Regulation Council of DOP Jumilla uses in the trophies that they give with the motive of wine events that are celebrated in that region).
Those and other findings, took the experts to encrypt more than 5000 years back to the antiquity of the wine tradition of this region that forms DOP Jumilla. But at the middle of XIX century when the filoxera plague punishes the variety of Europeans territories, especially France; which motivated spectacular takeoff of the vine economy of Jumilla, with the increase of the plantations of vines the big significant incrementing of the exportations especially to the nearest countries, which will enrich the local agrarian sector.
With this step of the time, Jumilla is transformed in one of the most ancient of the region of origin of Spain, with the regimentation from 1966. From the beginning of XX century works the Enological Station which at present collaborates with the Regulation council.
The region of origin Jumilla is located to the southeast of Spain, which makes it the zone that is characterized with big valleys and plains, marked by the mountains, the zone of transaction between Mediterranean Levantine coast and the Castilian-Manchego plateau, sheltering the production of the spacious zones: the municipality of Jumilla, the municipalities of Montealegre del Castillo, Fuentealamo, Ontur, Hellín, Albatana and Tobarra in the provence of Albacete.
