The Moscatel grape variety is one of the oldest known and has been characterized by giving rise to about 200 grape derivatives. As we said before, its origin is uncertain, although it has always been considered to have originated in Alexandria.

The Moscatel de Alejandría grape is said to have originated in the Mediterranean basin, north of Egypt, and is one of the oldest grapes that, according to experts, remains genetically unmodified and still persists. On the other hand, the small-grain Moscatel is considered to have originated in Greece or Turkey, being one of the oldest Mediterranean varieties. It is believed that the Greeks introduced it to France and, subsequently, it spread to other countries.

In the first place, it is important to point out that the Moscatel grape is technically a white grape characterized by its great aromatic power and its high sugar content. However, it can also give purple or pink grains with the same sweet floral scent.

Moscatel is known as the strain of the Mediterranean and is characterized mainly by its need for hot climates and humidity, that is, the influence of the sea for its best crop. Therefore, this grape is considered as the main variety of designations of origin of Malaga and Valencia.

We distinguish mainly between the Moscatel del Alejandría or Moscatel de Málaga grapes and the Moscatel de grano menudo or Moscatel Morisco, two types of white grapes.
