Airén is the white grape variety that is most cultivated in Spain. Specifically, most of the Airén vineyards are located in the region of Castilla-La Mancha (in the region of Valdepenas and La Mancha). The Airén strains produce large elongated clusters, yellow in color, with loose grains, medium-thick skin, soft pulp and colorless juice. These particular characteristics allow this variety to be very resistant to drought, able to adapt to poorly fertile soils, and adaptable to extreme climates. Traditionally the Airén variety has been used for bulk wines due to its large harvest volume. They have also been used for blending wines (coupages), as they are a very neutral variety. These qualities have made it a very undervalued wine. Lately, wineries have rediscovered the possibilities of this wine, highlighting its great qualities for the production of young and traditional wines. The wines made with the Airén grape have pale colors, interesting aromas with a tendency to fruity flavors such as banana, grapefruit or pineapple and moderate acidity. In the mouth there is a sweet taste, easy to drink. It is an ideal wine to drink on any occasion. In other communities, the airén grape is also known as Blancón, Malvar, Lairén, Aidén, Manchega or Forcallat.
