Region Valdeoras

Valdeorras' wine tradition goes back to Roman times. Under the protection of a Mediterranean-oceanic microclimate, the Romans planted vineyards and built wineries. They gave origin to a culture, today secular, in the attention of the vineyard and the elaboration of exquisite wines, which were sung by pilgrims and pilgrims on the way to Santiago.
Since that time, the arduous path traveled by winemakers and processors was paying off until in 1945, the Valdeorras Denomination of Origin was recognized by Ministerial Order. The Entity was born with the vocation to work in the recovery of autochthonous varieties such as Godello and Mencía, its fundamental lines of action being to bet on quality, promote control, facilitate promotion and seek new ways of expansion and commercialization .
Currently, the wine industry and the complex world around it is organized through the Regulatory Council, the body that governs the destinations of the Denomination of Origin, covering the viticultural areas of the municipalities of A Rúa, Carballeda de Valdeorras, Larouco, O Barco , O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá and Vilamartín.
The production zones occupy a large part of the basins of the Sil, Xares and Bibei rivers. In them, the climate is drier than in the rest of Galicia, mixing the Atlantic influence with features of the continental. The average temperature is about 11oC and the rainfall rate ranges between 850 and 1,000 mm annual.
The varieties of authorized castes are: For whites, preferably, Godello, and in addition, Dona Branca and Palomino or Jerez. For red wines, preferably Mencía and Sousón, but also Brancellao, Merenzao or María Ardona, Negreda, Garnacha Tintorera, Alicante, Tempranillo and Grao Negro.
