Grape Loureiro

Loureiro is a white grape variety which very focused at one area of Spain. Loureiro is a grape that grows in the south of Galicia, specifically in the Rías Baixas area and we can find some in the Ribeiro area (even in the Ribeira Sacra), but not the majority. It is in the north of Portugal where there is a greater cultivation of this grape, especially in the area known as Vinho Verde, the famous Albarinos of the neighboring country.

Synonyms such as Loureira, Marqués, Blanco Redondo or Dourado Galego, are some of the names given to this varietal. The name Loureiro comes from "laurel".

It is a grape that is usually used in the blends of the Albarinos for its differentiating contribution that allows the production of more exclusive wines that are different from those that are monovarietals of the latter grape.

The wines made with Loureiro have excellent acidity and are low in alcohol. It is an increasingly popular varietal but it is not used in the production of monovarietal wines or as the majority grape in coupages in Spain, unlike in Portugal, which does.

They are refreshing wines, eminently young, without aging complexity that are prone to premature oxidation, so they are usually bottled each time with a touch of carbon dioxide to guarantee optimum quality and add a touch of effervescence.

Do not confuse this varietal with the one also called Loureiro but in red, of which many wines are made with a great presence of this varietal, such as the Goliardo Loureiro made by Bodega Forja do Salnés, which we have already told you about in our magazine.

This white varietal joins others such as Treixadura or Caíno Blanco, Galician own and contribute in different percentages to the production of wines with the majority of Albarino grapes.

It is a varietal that likes not to have too many thermal fluctuations during the year, with high yields and that in monovarietal wines or with a majority of this grape, leaves wines with a low alcoholic degree but high acidity, which together with the presence of carbonic gas that We mentioned earlier, it brings freshness and spark to the wine.
