Grape Bobal

We are going to see the tasting sheets of each of the varieties registered by the Utiel-Requena PDO. We start with Bobal. Bobal is a native red grape variety of the Utiel-Requena PDO, also known as Bobos, Requena, Balau, Benicarló, Rajeno, Requení, Provechón, Balauro, tinto de Requena or Valencian ink, among others. of its presence in the region since the 15th century, as mentioned in the work “Espill o Llibre de les dones” by Jaume Roig.

At the end of the 19th century, with the arrival of phylloxera, the Bobal cultivation was further revalued due to its resistance to the plague, which is much more effective than in other strains. During this period the strain was also introduced in France, in the Roussillon area where it was baptized as “Carignan Espagnol” and ended up being confused with the “Beni-Carlo”, which receives the same name in the neighboring country.

There are indications that Bobal also came to Sicily where he was called "Bobal d'Espagna". Bobal is a variety with great resistance, it sprouts later than other red varieties, thus better protecting itself from the risk of spring frosts.

Currently the Bobal represents 75% of the hectares planted with vineyards in the Utiel-Requena PDO.

Bobal wines have an intense and characteristic color and an adequate level of tannins for aging.

It offers red aging wines, intense in color, full-bodied and complex flavors.

In addition, this variety is ideal for the production of carbonic maceration reds, as well as rosés, both with unique and very fruity tones.

The skin of the Bobal grape has a high content of resveratrol, a heart-healthy and anticancer substance.

Currently, you can also make other healthy and natural products made from Bobal grapes such as juice, cookies, jam or ice cream.
