Terras Gauda Bodegas
From the wine revolution that emerged in Galicia following the establishment in 1980 of the D.O. Rías Baixas, José María Fonseca, current president, began to see things clearly in the world of wine, and from his position on the Board, managed and supported the development of viticulture and enology courses, plus a series of related partnerships in the art of winemaking. With the initiative of the private sector and following the foundation of Vinedos do Rosal S.A. and Adegas das Eiras S.A., the dream of the Founders was realized with the establishment of the O Rosal wines. The winery’s philosophy was that Albarino, being such a noble variety, could benefit greatly from a union with other native varieties to provide it with subtle new qualities and so further enhance the already strong reputation of O Rosal wines. In 1990 the winery was founded and the produce of local grape-growers was used to make 37,000 bottles of Terras Gauda ‘90, the first year’s production, at the same time it was started to plant their own vineyards, with a clear view towards safeguarding the identity of O Rosal wine. In 1992, with the winery’s commitment to establishing its uniqueness now in place, the first wine from Albarino variety was produced: Abadía de San Campio. Terras Gauda Black Label production started in 1993, the first wine of D.O. Rías Baixas that was barrel fermented and aged on its lees. Over the years, the original two companies have merged into one, called - logically, given the prestige and recognition achieved by the leading brand - Bodegas Terras Gauda, S.A. La Mar was introduced in early 2011, the first wine in the world produced mostly with Caíno Blanco, that allows to enjoy the subtlety and strength of this variety, achieving the recovery and preservation of Caíno Blanco which was on the point of completely disappearing from the world of viticulture. Bodegas Terras Gauda has made advances in research and development while also distribution both nationally and internationally. Current sales are 1.5 million bottles of wine in over 50 countries.
