Grape Malvásia

The Malvasía grape (or Malvasía Blanca) not only refers to a single variety of white grape but also refers to a family of varieties originating in the Mediterranean, (it is not known with certainty if from Greece or Asia Minor) and from the island of Madeira in Portugal. Most of the varieties are sub-varieties of the White Malvasia, although the grape can also be pink or red (Black Malvasia).

If we talk about its characteristics, this vine is not very vigorous. Its production is low and it tends to be sensitive to diseases. Due to its age and extension, sub-varieties have arisen, but due to the low resistance to diseases, the cultivation has been reduced in many countries, being replaced by other more resistant varieties. It is sensitive to rot. It is not very resistant to drought, adapted to mild and humid climates in loose and drained soils.

With this variety, the majority of generous or liquorous white wines are made, of high alcohol content, sweet and fragrant.

With such a number of sub-varieties, it is difficult to generalize about the flavor of the Malvasía grape; the worst species can be bland and low acid, with a tendency to oxidize easily, while the tops have character and aroma, but not as exotic as Muscatel. In Madeira the flavor is intense, smoky and reminiscent of molasses, but somewhat limited by the acidity.

In Spain, Malvasía is found mainly in Rioja, Navarra and the Canary Islands. If we cross the pond we will find it also planted in California.
